Realizations

Since its foundation, the school for the hearing impaired children has achieved the following:

Construction:

  • the center for screening deafness and medical care
  • the school canteen
  • 3 classrooms for preschool and a playground for the children of preschool
  • pavement of the yard for the installation of a multifunctional sports field
(basket-, volley- and handball and tennis)

The school aims to construct a dormitory above the canteen to host children that live in the suburbs of Bamako. Momentary these children stay with their parents and have no access to education.

Exams:
Admission to 7e
2003 – 2004 present 12 admitted 10
2004 – 2005 present 14 admitted 11
2005 – 2006 present 18 admitted 12
2006 – 2007 present 16 admitted 12

Diploma of fundamental studies
2005 – 2006 present 9 admitted 7
2006 – 2007 present 14 admitted 8

Vocational training :

  • The school has sent 3 students to a vocational training in “Verseau”, Marseille. They were trained as professional “animateurs” in sign language. These 3 young people take care of children between the ages of 3 to 6.
  • 7 Students that have received a diploma in fundamental studies have followed trainings in teaching so they can back up the teachers of schools for hearing impaired children throughout the country.
  • The school has sent the director of the school to “Verseau” in Marseille for a vocational training in interpretation of sign language.
  • Short trainings for the teachers.
  • Some training was given to the children’s parents in sign language.
  • 12 Teachers received training in Information Technology.

Although a wide variety of vocational trainings were realized, more trainings are
required. This should include: training at least 3 more interpreters of sign language, training of a hearing aid specialist and 2 speech therapists. These trainings are necessary in order to let the center of screening and medical care be operational for 80 %.
An initial training for parents and follow-up training for others in sign language so they can easily communicate with their children and be more involved with their child’s education.

Transport:

The school provides free transport for the children. This transport brings reassurance to the families, in terms of safety and education. Unfortunately the 2 Mini Buses cannot transport more than 30 children. The fuel expenses increase the costs for the school vastly.
To triple the effect and reduce the costs of transport, the school hopes to obtain 4 buses of 50 seats each.
This will also lead to more cooperation with the Bamako transport companies
and will provide the children with access to urban transport throughout the city to come to school.
